Theatrical lighting design sometimes goes unnoticed, Jennifer Tipton said, because it tends to focus attention on performers and sets rather than on itself. But that hasn’t prevented Ms. Tipton, a two-time Tony Award winner, from being recognized for the quality of her work. On Thursday she was named as this year’s recipient of the Baryshnikov Arts Center’s Cage Cunningham Fellowship.

Mikhail Baryshnikov, the center’s founder and artistic director, said in a statement that he admires her “boundless curiosity” and “extraordinary knowledge.”

Ms. Tipton, who works in theater, dance and opera, will receive $50,000 in support of a project of her choosing and the use of the center’s John Cage & Merce Cunningham Studio for up to eight weeks. The fellowship will also supply her with administrative support for her project.

In an interview she said she was planning to create, in collaboration with set and sound designers, something light based that focuses on both environmental and environmentalist issues. “I would like for it to be sort of an installation that allows an audience to discover what light is and how it makes them feel and how it makes them look at a moment, a scene, a place, a person perhaps, in a different way.”

Her concerns about climate change and the destruction of the natural world, she said, will likely play a role. “Light is somehow the substance of the universe and a big challenge for me is to show how it’s timeless but also how we can waste it and disregard it.”

Ms. Tipton’s career as a lighting designer began in the 1960s when she started working with the choreographers Paul Taylor and Twyla Tharp. Her work can be seen in the Broadway production of Aaron Sorkin’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.” She also recently lit Ms. Tharp’s “A Gathering of Ghosts” for American Ballet Theater, which returns in May.

The Cage Cunningham Fellowship is awarded to artists who, in the center’s view, share John Cage and Merce Cunningham’s commitment to creative innovation. Past winners include the pianist Alexei Lubimov, who commissioned pieces by five composers with his award; and the choreographer Pam Tanowitz, who used her time as a fellow to develop her critically acclaimed “Four Quartets.”
